Arty Farty Friday: Tom Ford is my Secret Crush

Posted on

There, I’ve said it!

Something about Tom Ford makes me secretly swoon- he’s intelligent, talented, unbelievably stylish and you just know he smells good!

He first came to my attention when he took over designing for Gucci in 1994 and created some of the most recognisable silhouettes of the 20th century.

He was also one of the hardest working designers, although the pace of life being a fashion demigod wore him down.

The documentary I’d like to recommend isn’t as gritty as I like them, there’s plenty of arty farty talk (and not in the good way), but there are some gems, like when he described being a boy, looking down at the new shoes his mother had bought him and just knowing there was something flawed in their design.

It’s also fascinating to watch his designing process.

I’ve mentioned many times that despite having a degree in fashion design, I know I’ll never work in fashion.

One of the reasons is that I have little attention to detail which is essential in creating clothes.

It’s fascinating to watch Tom get his scissors out and start hacking away at a jacket I would have given the green light to.

What I admire most is that in 2004 Ford was able to walk away from a career that was slowly destroying him and turned to making another dream come true meaning directing.

A-Single-Man-LowRes

In 2009 he wrote, produced and directed The Single Man, which is based on a book written by  Christopher Isherwood of the same title, much to the disbelieve and amusement of the fashion world.

Ford has stated that the main character is loosely based on his own experiences, and was his way of dealing with his mid-life crisis.

How can you not just crush on this guy?

Arty Farty Friday: McQueen and I

Posted on

This is the last Arty Farty Friday of September and I wanted to take the series of posts in another direction.

One of my graduation thesis papers was titled “Is Fashion Art?”.

To make a long story short, I summarized that, indeed it was, and when you look at collections produced by top designers, you can have no doubt.

I also included examples of how fashion and art collide, one inspiring the other, but that deserves its own post.

When I was at Fashion Design school I realised how hard it is to come up with a collection that fits trends, it sellable but original, one that is your voice but appeals to others.

It really is a terribly hard task (not to mention expensive) and as much as I enjoyed the process, I knew I’d never make fashion design my profession.

I think it takes extraordinary talent and tailoring/construction skills to make something that is ground-breaking and beautiful.

When designing you feel like everything has already been done before and the few original ideas  you have (lego shoes anyone?) are beyond difficult to construct and make practical.

The world of fashion looks glamorous on the outside, but it really is all blood, sweat, and tears, tantrums and even the odd tiara.

The “it” designer at the time, the one all students looked up to in awe, was Alexander McQueen.

He was a visionary who combined theatricality with superb tailoring, a new voice in the stale world of fashion.

He had taken the catwalk show and had turned it into a performance.

I came across a 2011 documentary titled McQueen and I which follows the designer’s journey into the world of fashion, but which especially focuses on his muse and friend Isabella Blow.

Their relationship was both a burst of inspiration and creativity, but also one marred by depression and resentment.

Blow had an incredible eye for talent and would use her influence in the fashion world to launch new talent like McQueen or McDonald, but felt unappreciated when they’d inevitably move on.

McQueen designed some of the most recognisable fashion pieces of our generation and I regret that the documentary doesn’t focus more on his creations, having said that we learn about his tumultuous private life and what would inspire his vision.

This is a tale of an incredibly talented and sensitive visionary who led a pace-paced life releasing 10 collections each year, but also about the pitfalls of fame and the pressure to constantly produce something that will outdo everything you’ve done before.

I want Candy… Eye Candy that is…

I’m busy with college this weekend, so I’d just like to leave you with a few hot pics to help you combat the frosty weather 🙂

Here are a few collages of my favorite Richard Armitage photo shoots representing the past, present, and future and His Highness Gorgeousness I (and hopefully the start of an equally beautiful dynasty).

The past from 2010, during the ‘blue Lucas’ phase

The stance, the beautiful blue eyes and Prada shirt.

And the jeans with no room… for error 😉

Richard Armitage 2010 Blue

The present favorite from December, taken in New York during The Hobbit promotion.

Armitage goes for a more youthful look (Yo! Dude, love the hoodie man!!!), but I like this shoot mostly because it’s so animated and ‘real’.

I like a man who’s good with his hands… errrr… meant to say a man who talks with his hands…

And hopefully Richard’s future styling from now on, from Glamour Magazine UK

The classical styling kills me and I adore the hairstyle.

He even looks like he smells fabulous!

Scratch and sniff…

Sniff and melt…

Melt and scratch… and repeat the process…

What’s your favorite photo shoot?

What melts your inner-snowman?

Mr Armitage, I like you in your blue jeans, you give me sweet dreams…

Many of you know the particular fondness I have for Richard Armitage and his jeans, especially of the tight (tight I tell you!!) Lucas North variety.

I’ve discussed them and what lies beneath, bounced coins of them, even compared their appeal to Porter combat pants.

Therefore I see it as fate that GizTheGunslinger takes my personal fetish to new heights.

This is one of the most beautiful fanvids I’ve seen in ages.

It’s so stunning, I dare you to watch it just the once!

I haven’t watched a fanvid so many times in a row since discovering Sexy Back 3 which has now become an Armitage Army classic and was even mentioned in the Richard Armitage Glamour UK interview 😉

The images are so powerful they actually make Lana Del Rey sound really good (this is me being bitchy in 2013, to hell with resolutions…).

Looking like that, blue jeans will never go out of style 🙂

23 hours till The Hobbit and Counting…

The Hobbit is so close I can almost taste it 🙂

As I write this post, the countdown on the sidebar says 23 hours before I see the film.

I’ll be heading over to London in a few hours, but before I get on the plane let me share with you some of the ways I’ve been expressing my excitement (besides jumping up and down and overusing the word Yahoooo!)..

Firstly, if you haven’t checked out the fruit of Seba‘s labour of sweet RA love, you simply have to.

Get your Hobbit Cookies Here!

He answered my call for someone to test Hobbit cookie recipes, and went above and beyond.

They look super yummy, so head over there for the details and sweeten up your day!

By the way, Seba saw The Hobbit last night, so scoot over to his blog to read about his impressions.

NO SPOILERS, so not to worry!

Dwarves black

I’ve also ordered a few tops with images I’ve been fiddling with, I’m still waiting on them and time is running out.

I’ll be bummed not to have them before London, but not to worry, I still have the Polish film release to look forward to.

I can only hope the T-shirts come out all rights.

The following image was created as a bit of a giggle.

It was inspired by a post about Hobbit merchandise and the My Little Pony Thorin Spa.

I also printed this beautiful image created by Seba at GisbornesBoy on a white T-shirt.

If you head over there, Seba has created a number of versions of this stunning image to suit all tastes.

We’re so lucky that he shares his talent with us!

Last but not least, I found this amazing image at adlpictures.

I love it on so many levels, least of which comparing the dwarf plight with the biblical story, but that’s best left for another day.

I fiddled about with Thorin’s Last Supper by aging it a tad and adding crack and “Dirty Dwarves”.

I’ve also mentioned wanting to use my non-existent skills and try making some Hobbity jewelery.

I  decided to make a brooch from Thorin’s Key to Erebor.

I used the key chain that is readily available, although it was a bit too silvery and cheap-looking for my taste.

DSC03078

You have to admit it’s a bit tacky.

I ended attaching the rest of the key chain to my garage keys.

The pin is attached using the playdough-like substance you use to stop a leaking pipe.

One might think that a  hot glue gun would be a better idea, and sure, you’d be right, that is of course if you can find it…

Anyway, my DIY plumbing material worked like a charm 😉DSC03091

Then I used some furniture varnish with golden coloured dust to cover the bright silver.

I tried not to pile it on because I already liked the darker elements of the key and wanted to keep the rustic feel.

I also used a regular crayon to add a bit of rusty looking depth, but I’m not sure it’s all that visible.

Anyway, here’s the final effect and I’m happy 🙂

DSC03095

Talking about visible representations of The Hobbit excitement, the last thing I’d like to mention is the heater in my sisters kitchen.

We use it for magnets and funny notes, so I decided to hang up my birthday card.DSC03098

I turn around and find a note left by my sister Magzy expressing her displeasure with my Armitage expansion tendencies.

That cracked me up, especially her choice of deity she calls upon!

Clearly she’s struggling to get into the Hobbit spirit 😉

Have a wonderful weekend and I will see you on the other side of The Hobbit rainbow 😉

Taking Fashion Tips from Guy of Gisborne

Posted on

I came across the following image at Debbie Does Doodle and it immediately made me think that it’s focusing on the wrong character from the Robin Hood story 🙂

Here’s the styling, which really embodied Robin, but interprets it in a way that any woman would feel feminine and sexy.

Gone are the green tights and dodgy hat.

I especially like the arrow earrings and gold leaf bracelets.

I though about how to reinterpreted the style of our Sherwood sweetheart Guy of Gisborne, and perhaps it could serve as inspiration for a mild version of a Grizzly Gizzy Halloween costume, or a least a themed outfit that nods towards him.

I see plenty of leather, beautiful boots, an interesting studded trench and some green velvet, here present in the form of a clutch bag.

The thighs are on full display and the shoulders are bold.

What’s missing?

I doubt any modern woman could afford to be tied up quite as often as Guy seems to be!

Let’s leave the rope at home!

I’m especially excited about the black pearl Ciate nail varnish.

I’m actually going to get my hands on it today and I’m still not sure if I love it of find it really weird.

Because I’ve been eating very healthy, my nails are very long and strong, so I may end up looking like I was given a manicure by Morticia Addams.

I’ll keep you posted 🙂

Have a wonderful Gizzy Day, take some fashion tips from him and strut like you won’t fit in the door frame!

Hey RArmy, do you have your Owl Hat on?

Posted on

Happy Silly Sunday!

I very rarely have dreams connected to Richard Armitage, but during the summer I had one which was a bit on the bizarre side.

It actually involved the RArmy of friends more than the man himself.

As it turned out, I never ended up writing the post, but something I came across reminded me of it.

The dream involved The RArmy wearing these snazzy owl hats.

Do I mean snazzy?

Nope, I think I should write: silly!

The picture above is the best representation of the image I saw in my dream.

We all looked like cheesy corporation staff posing for company photos for a poster on ethics in the workplace, for which I really do apologise.

If it makes anyone feel any better, it’s not really how I see us during my waking hours 😉

But back to the headgear:

I’ll let you try to think of reasons why a group of intelligent Richard Armitage fans would feel the need to wear matching hats to express their belonging to a group.

It would, however, seem that the Owl trend is an absolute Hoot (OK, that’s out of my system…) for autumn 2012.

That means that the more fashion-conscious Richard Armitage fan can express their allegiance to the RArmy in many different ways, besides the unflattering felt hat.

Don’t want to mess up your funky hairstyle with an owl hat?

How about an owl T-Shirt

own tshirt

Too cold? How about a jumper to cover up your cold hooters…

Do you like your Blink blink?

Can’t afford diamonds?

You’ll just have to wing it with this cute owl necklace…

Birds of a feather accessories together, so you should go for these gold earrings too…

How about an owl handbag to keep all your RA dreams in?

No two ways about it!

I don’t give a hoot what you say, Owls are flying high this season!

Even the Big Boys on fashion, like Burberry Prorsum, are keeping things owliscious!

I can’t help but think my RArmy owl hat was somehow prophetic in egged on a whole new fashion trend!

It’s like I hatched a plan to introduce a new Richard Armitage admiration symbol to the ignorant masses!

They think they’re wearing a cute owl accessories.

In reality they are affiliating themselves with Armitage admirers…

Take some of this Armitage love, Fashionistas!

Waaaa…WaaaaHHHHHaaaa… WwaaaahhhhhaaAAA… (evil laugh continues for some time…).

So Ladies, if you’d like to express your Armitage admiration, and you’re still not ready to walk around wearing a T-Shirt with an image of Guy of Gisborne that says: Swollen Leather Goods, how about a little owl design somewhere on your person 🙂

I promise I won’t tell anyone that far from blindly following a fashion trend, you’re actually expressing your luv for a certain sexy British hunk!
