Being on pins and needles about The Hobbit

Hello my lovelies,

I’ve been MIA for the past few days but I have a good excuse.

As some of you know, I’m partial to the odd craft project, but I think I’ve found one that has been consuming most of my free time (not to mention relaxing me into oblivion…).

Yes, I seemed to have slipped into middle-age and am passionate about cross-stitching, so don’t you dare judge me!

For those who don’t know what the heck that is, I suggest you check out this tutorial that generally talks you through this easy, not to mention inexpensive, hobby.

Seriously, it’s the most fun I’ve had in ages, with or with out my clothes off and I’d prefer you think I was joking because the alternative is a bit disturbing…

It all started so innocently when I decided to cross-stitch some images I could then glue into a ring of brooch.

Then I moved on to larger designs and now I’m consumed by it.

Imagine me with my thread and canvas, with an Armitage audiobook playing in the background.

Sheer bliss 🙂

Anyway, you may wonder why I am boring you more than usual and this is the reason:

The Hobbit cross-stitch patterns!

It’s An Unexpected Hobby, the Desolation of Free Time, going There and Back agin with your needle and thread!

Check out this amazing pattern:

I’ve been honing my skills in the past few days in order to try my hand and this snazzy design.

XStitchMyHeart is selling this amazing pattern of Etsy and I want it my precious!

If that’s not your tumbler of mead, how about this Hobbit design:

Adorable, no?

Both cost around 3GBP and I don’t know which one I want, so I’m afraid I shall end up trying both… oh, just noticed the seller has a sale on- 3 designs for 6GBP 😉

If you don’t want to spend a penny on patterns, the internet is a wonderful resource for cross-switchers and  this Hobbit house stitch pattern is no exception:

It doesn’t come with a colour legend, but then I think that’s what makes this project fun, although the amount of shades is specifies.

And for something a bit more challenging, how about a 28 different DMC color pattern:

I’m not ready to slay this particular dragon, I’ll let it sleep deep in my hobby layer…

As I relax with my thread and Richard’s soothing voice, I hope you have a wonderful day too!

Get ready for extreme audio pleasure, Armitage is at it again!

I wasn’t going to post today and have been working on my crafty projects, but I’m doing my happy dance and

I’m so excited,

I just can’t hide it,

I’m about to lose control and I think I like it

Oh yeah!!!

As most of you know already, Richard will be recording the audio edition of Hamlet, a Novel by A.J. Hartley and David Hewson.

Now, you may be sitting there thinking: OK, good news that Richard is doing something new, but an audiobook? really? what’s the big deal?

If you are one of those people, that tells me you haven’t actually listened to any of Richard’s audiobook because holy ear orgasm!

Even though Armitage plays a plethora of characters, male, female, old and young, you get lost in the moment and forget it’s one person stuck behind a microphone.

I’m not too bothered (yet) what Richard is recording, be it Hamlet or Jill’s Gymkhana but I have a feeling Shakespeare is going to be our homeboy from now on 😉

My absolute favorite among Armitage audiobooks (and all of them are great, so that’s saying a lot) is Lords of the North which I have written about before, and before that too.

I’ll just say that mid-way I was sobbing when something particularly horrible happened to the protagonist, but then at times I’d laugh out loud too, just to balance things out.

The CD’s  (12 hours of them) are hard to come by, but RANet is running a competition where you have the chance to get your hands on the whole set (thanks Miriam!).

Check out the first few chapters and even more audiobook extracts at RAnet.

Anyway, bring it on Armitage!

Armitage Weekly Round-Up Week 8

armitage 8

Welcome to week 8 of the Armitage Weekly Round-up.

Guylty almost developed a case of sprained finger and wrist from clicking up and down the Tumblr feed to pick out the best of microblogging, so check out the Tumblr Round-Up for week 8.

Here are the RA/Hobbit/OT posts, I hope they brighten up your day 🙂

The perfect hot beverage to sip on when reading The Hobbit

It warms my heart when Richard is included in a “perfect casting” pick. Make it so!

I really need to pack a suitcase and head to Hobbiton (and yes, I know I say that almost every week)

Will Comic Con get the dwarf treatment in 2014? Here’s to hoping!

To celebrate, how about a Dwarvicise video to build up a sweat (an oldie but goodie).

Hey dwarves, let’s get physical!

Don’t forget to check out Guylty’s Tumblr Round-Up!

It’s Thorin’s everywhere!

Please be warned that there’s an abundance of very pretty stuff coming up, so if you’re only planning on window-shopping, please put paypal/credit card details out of reach…

This morning as I was preparing for work I felt an overwhelming need for Thorin to accompany me.

Some of you may remember that I had been fiddling about with some images of our majestic dwarf for the premiere of The Hobbit: AUJ and I ended up creating a Thorin/My Little Pony image (still not sure what prompted me…).

my little thorinThe T-shirt design has faded from washing, but it was still a very good Friday T-shirt option.

It got me thinking about how hand-made (with love) Thorin goodies fill in the gap in the dwarf merchandise that some of us are feeling.

Here are some objects that give me a serious case of grabby hands:

I absolutely love this  Thorin Owlshield (OK, I did my best to come up with a funny name, but that’s all I’ve got…).

Anyway, this Thorin bookmark is a hoot!

If what you’d like Thorin to do is take an unexpected journey to your bed, then here’s your chance with adorable The Hobbit pillow plushies.

What I want to know is can the Thorin pillow plushy arms wrap all the way around someone… err.. I’m asking for a friend…

Talking of Thorin plushies, how beautiful is this hand-made felt version?

I always thought that his thunder brows were his most prominent feature, but there’s no mistaking this little guy.

Good news if he ever gets drunk, passes out and the company end up shaving his brows off as a joke…

Where there’s a dwarf, there’s always an excuse to party and check out The Hobbit Cake Kit (yup, that’s a thing!).

It includes 3 Hobbit figurines, luckily Thorin is one of them,  and a pop-up background.

If I had my choice of characters, apart from Oakey, I’d go for sassy Thranduil and Smaug, just to heat things up. Mmmm red velvet cake…

I hope the “pop-up” background makes the cake look like this:

Ain’t no party like a Tolkien party!

If you want something special (and support one of our own!) I suggest you check out Gisborne’s Boy/Sebababy’s artwork available at Red Bubble.

You can order his images on a variety of items, like T-shirts, phone cases and stickers.

And if your Armitage love isn’t limited to Thorin, how about getting greedy and ordering a Team Everyone design.

fig,white_black,raglan,ffffff.u1There’s also a mountain-high amount of adorable Hobbit/Thorin/Tolkien designs to check out at Red Bubble under the “Everything Thorin” tag.

Have you come across some delicious hand-made design?

If so, leave links in comments so we can all sit around and drool, then go rob a bank.

I will see you tomorrow for the weekly round-up!

Happy Hump Day (with a few random pictures of Lucas)

Some of you may know that I’m somewhat enamored with the English language, both in my professional and private life.

There are words that have no equivalent in Polish, like “fortnight”or this useful expression:

Happy Hump Day!

The term relates to the day in the middle of the work week (so, Wednesday) and marks the time when it’s closer to the upcoming weekend than to the past one.

If you imagine that a work week is a hill, Wednesday means you’ve reached the peak and it’s all downhill from then on.

You can find a hump or two on a camel:

feeding a camelwhat? have you never seen a grown woman feed a camel like a mama bird?

Synonyms for the noun “hump” include the word knob and bulge, a protrusion if you like.

On a totally unrelated note, here’s a picture of Lucas North…

The Black Eyed Peas claim that “my humps” are my “lovely lady lumps”, which I would image refers to the fatty tissue of the breasts and bum.

The song doesn’t specify if this term applies to “lovely gentlemen lumps” too and I shall give this some thought before the next hump day…

vlcsnap-2010-09-27-23h36m58s65.png w=608&h=336Oh no, I was going to post an image displaying the anatomy of a camel hump, but this pic loaded instead… I’ll keep it this time…

Hump also has a slang meaning and refers to doing the horizontal tango between the sheets/getting jiggy with it (which is actually the new medical term for coitus and comes from the Latin jigglatum which means “I got lucky”).

Another unrelated Lucas pic, I really love those floorboards, do you think that’s ash?

There’s also the term “dry humping” which I’m pretty certain refers to the action of a camel standing under an umbrella on a rainy day.

Couldn’t find a picture of a camel with an umbrella, so here’s another unrelated Lucas pic…

Whatever your needs are, I hope you have a fabulous Hump Day, no matter what meaning of the word you adopt 😉

She’s into superstitions, black cats and voodoo dolls (but sadly doesn’t bang…)

SuperstitionsThis one is for you Magzy, my little felinophobic

I have a confession to make that although I may regard myself as a somewhat rational person, I have a few kinks.

Case in point, years ago I’d have to park my car near work, but some mornings it was a tedious act of circling around looking for someone to drive off and put me out of my misery.

There was, however, one sure way that a parking spot was right around the corner:

A black cat (but I wasn’t all too bothered with the exact colour) would cross the road right in front of me.

As far-fetched as it may sound, each time one would appear within my line of vision I was guaranteed to find a spot on the next round.

For the record I firmly do believe that there’s more than mere superstition at play here:

Black magic?

Fortune-telling traffic-regulating felines?

Cat’s getting ready to take over the world one parking spot at a time?

I’m either becoming a superstitious fool or slowly transforming into the village witch- just call me Baba Jaga 😉

I also grab a button when I see a chimney sweep, but seeing I don’t actually live next door to Mary Poppins, that’s perhaps a moot point.

Of course, there are people who are superstitious about a number of things.

My mum won’t change the sheets on a Friday nor will she willingly make an appointment to see a  doctor (irony of ironies, her weekly chemo is schedule for that day…).

She will sit down, at least for a few seconds, when she’s had to come back home after forgetting something.

Some superstitions are just common sense:

Don’t walk under a ladder (or the bucket will drop on your head)

Don’t open an umbrella indoors (or you’ll take someone’s eye out)

Don’t crack a mirror or when applied, your eyeliner will end up all dodgy

The there are superstitions that differ in countries and regions:

In English they say that bad luck comes in threes, in Poland they are actually paired.

We knock on wood but in Poland it’s important that the wood is unpainted/bear.

In English you cross your fingers, in Poland we “hold our thumbs” for good luck.

As a child raised in 2 cultures I have actually perfected the art of simultaneous finger-crossing/thumb-holding to double my chances and I bet at least a few of you are trying it out this very moment 😉

Yup, Poland may be a bit of an odd country because we regard being pooped on by birds and stepping in dog crap as a sign of good luck and prosperity, so think of that the next time you’re washing sh*t off your new coat or shoes…

The reason that I bring all of this up is that today as me and my pups were driving home a black cat appeared.

Granted, it didn’t cross the road but rather ran alongside us for a few meters, but I’m taking that as a good omen.

Over to you:

What are the superstitions in your country, which ones bring you luck?

Because what’s left is shame…

I’ve written this post a thousand times in my mind, but I promised my sister that I wouldn’t write it in anger, I think there’s been much too much of that lately.

There’s been such ugliness in the past few days I think many of us find it hard to actually comprehend.

I think much has been said before in other posts, so I won’t be rehashing the events.

I think this is a good moment to go back and think of our own decisions, actions and  reactions that have led to this point.

I’m not pointing fingers at anyone but myself.

By ignoring  what others were doing I allowed for the situation to escalate to the point where I actually feel ashamed of myself.

Would it have made a difference if I spoke up?

Probably not.

I would have ended up under fire too and I genuinely thought that people would get bored of hurling abuse and would move on to something a bit more creative.

No excuses, though.

As it stands now, I feel like many of us are proclaiming the fandom/bullying equivalent of “I smoked but I didn’t inhale”.

I didn’t participate but I did nothing, I coward away because I was afraid at what I’d find and what I’d learn about people I considered my online friends.

I don’t know about you but I want to take this time to think about what I can do in future to prevent such horrible things from happening again.

I’d also need to apologise for being such a shitty friend.

I should have been the one to try to protect you from the horrible things people where doing and it turned out you were protecting me so I wouldn’t be disappointed when I learned of their true nature.

I think we could all use a moment to think, I know I do…
