The AgzyM. There and Back Again!

Resist Gizzy

Dearest Friends,

I’ve been a bad bad fangirl and blogger, but I didn’t think it would take me so long to get back in the saddle.

I’d like to thank everyone who emailed me during my absence here, it really means to the world to know someone out there is thinking: Hey, wonder whatever happened to that weird chick?

I’d especially like to thank a certain someone who rhymes with…. eerrrr… Lervetus (not a real word…) for bringing Richard on board to cheerlead me.

Your support has been invaluable, so Thank YOU for being there when I literally thought I wouldn’t write a page worth a damn (not to mention a degree).

The academic part of my degree is done, and I’m happy to report that I’m satisfied with the results.

As to that other little matter of my thesis… well, let’s say there’s still miles to go before I sleep.

As some of you may know, I decided to change my topic from fashion to…..

Drumrollsssss….

Fandoms and fanfiction!

Yup, obsessive admiration has now bled into yet ANOTHER part of my life, but in my darkest hours (spent tearing my hair out and packed with sleepless nights worrying that I couldn’t/wasn’t writing) having a topic so dear to my heart was my saving grace.

As I hark on about myself you’re all thinking when I’ll shut up and start behaving like a proper blogger contributing to an esteemed fandom.

Well, I do intend to make these blogging thingies a norm (heavens help us all…) but I need to ask something in return, the greedy thing that I am.

I have just completed my second chapter and I am moving on to the last one which may prove to be the most challenging.

In it I will be using a number of my favourite fanfics as a case study, and I need to call upon you (yes, YOU!) to help me get enough data to fill the last 18 pages.

I hope to get feedback from fandom members,  fanfiction authors and readers.

That is why I need to call upon you my dear friends, as I need to pick your fangirling brains in order to complete this last (and most challenging) chapter.

Guy of Gizzy Survey_edytowany-1

I have constructed a tiny (and I MEAN tiny as in 10 questions) survey that will take you under 3 minutes to complete.

It’s a basic list of questions to get me started on my findings and will serve as an intro to the chapter.

It would mean the world to me if you took 3 minutes out of your ogling hot men time to take it!

Here’s a link to the survey:

Just so you don’t think I’m asking for something for nothing in return!

The sooner I complete the chapter (with your help), the sooner I can turn my mind to the topic of a very vital Birthday celebration that is taking place in August.

Continuing last years tradition, in return for your help I promise another Operation Armitage Birthday Competition.

Gizzy Competition

Yup, for 7 days to countdown towards Richard’s Birthday (also known as Armitage Day) you will have a chance to get your hands on an Armitage goodie.

That’s right!

I’m insulting your intelligence by bribing you with a week long Armitage competition with prizes, as well as guilting you into taking my damn survey, a move worthy of Gizzy himself 🙂

That’s what friends are for!

Oh, by the way, did I mention this survey you can take AND pass on to others?

No?

Well here it is again:

And hell! It’s good to be back! 🙂

Ps. Click on image to see Gizzy riding his horse naked…

Ok, maybe it’s a link to that damn survey I’m cramming down your throat…

Again, Gizzy would approve of my tactics, although would probably object to chafing caused my horse-riding in the duff!

I will be calling upon all my fanfic writing friends to get the writer’s perspective, so I really hope you won’t mind me asking you a few questions in a few weeks. Nothing too vexing 🙂 Keep up the good work and I can’t wait to read more from you!

And remember, I love you. So much! We need to exchange some emails soon. 😉 xoxo

So happy to read that the academic side of your degree is completed and that you’re satisfied with the results. Wishing you lots of *good vibes* for the thesis part.

Survey done and dusted. Hope it helps with your work.

Another Armitage Day competition! Woo-hoo! I had such a great time last year! Not to mention winning that nifty little Armitage prize. (Thanks again!) Is there anything I can do to help you?

Good to have you back, Sweetie! I was just thinking about you last night, seriously. *hug*

    • Waves to Z like a maniac! Now the pressure is on to: actually have a post for tomorrow…and the day after… Then to come up with something worth competeing for during Operation Armitage. Did it get hot in here all of a sudden or is it just me? 🙂 we shall prevail! As Armitage is my witness, my blog shall never go not updated again! Now, what’s the latest gossip? I’ve been lurking a tad, but what have I missed?

    • Thanks Phylly! It’s very much appreciated! Operation Armitage Week which ends with Armitage Day is one of my favourite times of the year, so it’s time to put that thinking cap on and see what my twisted mind will come up with 😉 I had such a blast last year it would be a shame not to come out and play with my fellow Richardetts!

  6. Yay~~~~~ Richard is so happy!!!!! He’d like to take his clothes off for you but he’s unavoidably detained in NZ.

    • So what, he can’t go nude in NZ? Some Kiwi law forbidding that? I think not, although it is winter down there, so it’d get mighty chilly… down there… wouldn’t want Richard to get frostbite 😉

Plus I’d like leaves covering my naughty bits, I’m not standing around in beautiful Florence (and it truly is breathtaking) with everything showing 😉

  12. Hi 🙂 we’ve not met (I’m fairly new to the RA fandom 😉 ) but I took your survey because I think it’s awesome that you are writing about fandoms and fanfiction! (I’ve always thought that the effects of fandoms, both positive and negative, is an interesting topic) I’ve been involved in a few different fandoms over the years, and would be happy to talk to you about them if you need more material for your research 🙂 (I enjoy reading fanfic too 😉 )

    Reply
    • Any fangirl is a friend of mine! Consider us met 😉 The topic of fandoms has become huge in the past few years and scholars are really taking notice. No longer do we lurk in the shadows. Greek is truly the new chic! If you’re interested in the topic of online interaction, I recommend reading Henry Jenkins. He was my breakthrough when writing and some of his theories are fascinating!

  13. Welcome back Agzy! You have been missed. I took your survey – you bullied me into it!! 🙂 JK! I read a fair bit of fanfic and have found some really great stories. So many talented writers out there.

    Reply
    • In all fairness, Gizzy did the bullying 😉 I’m so happy I decided to write about online communities and fanfiction. The level of writing is unreal. I recently started a few books written by professional writers and I must say, fanfic authors have spoiled me to the point where I was really disappointed at the quality. Bless the internet for giving these fanfic authors the platform to exhibit their work!

        • She’s going there for the international catholic meet-up. She’s very excited about it and I happily encouraged her to go, although I know she’s a singe mother on a tight budget. It’s just one of those trips you have to take the plunge and decide to go. Once you make the decision other things (like that stupid question of money) will fall into place 🙂

          Reply
          • Wow… she must be really religious to come all this long way for the catholic meet-up with the new Pope presence. Now, more than ever, I wish she has a wonderful time in Rio!!!

          • As I’ve probably mentioned before, I’m not religious at all and I have certain issues with religious institutions, but I see the benefits she derives from being part of a community and she’s such a good person through and through, and I can hardly criticize her for it. She had a few near death experiences as a child and that resulted in the strengthening of her faith. I know this trip is a one-in-a-lifetime for her, and I really tried my best to support her!

  17. Woohooo Agzy, good to see you around again!! Looking forward to new hilarious adventures and challenges. You know, just now swinging my matchless Bad-Boys-Bag (Hi Sebastian!!), parading up and down….
Completed the survey right away (Yes, me a good fan girl; hopefully Gizzy is presenting the one and only, the smirk!!), but honestly had some problems getting the idea of all the different kinds of fan-fictions 🙄

  23. Yeah! I heard you were back! First thing I did is bookmarked your current Fic! I’ve actually just finished my first BC Fic and you’ve been on my mind. I took the survey and boy didn’t know such a thing as Pregfic existed??? I think you missed one category though RPF : Real Person Fic or did you omit that on purpose?

    Reply
    • Yup, that’s true. With the survey I figured I won’t explain the categories. If someone reads them they’ll know! I have so many favourite Sherlock related fics that I keep on rereading, I think a post listing them is in order 🙂

      Reply
      • I look forward to that post! I’ve reread one shots but there’s so much new Fic in progress I haven’t got much time between real book reading. I’ve been thinking about a technical post on how to use readability and pocket services in making reading Fic convenient particularly when it’s posted on tumblr

        Reply
        • A tech post is a great idea. One of the reasons I don’t read fics on some sights is that I can’t get at em’ and I don’t enjoy reading on my laptop. I’ve found a way (probably a too complex way) to put them on my Kindle, and I’m sure many would enjoy this form of reading. Can I just take a moment to comment on the level of fanfic writing! Holy cow, are some of them good. So good in fact that I sometimes start reading a “professional” (for lack of a better description) published book and they come up short. I’m just thankful that all these writers have the opportunity to share their work with us, spoil us and make us fall in love with our favourite characters (like Sherlock and Watson) all over again!

          Reply
          • Kindle has made it easier to read webpages, I’m a little impaired to fully explain as I read via the app on iOS so I can’t test the web service of “send to kindle” (wanna be my test bunny tweet me 🙂 but I can send documents to kindle. I find their synch feature so convenient as I often switch between reading on my iPad and iPhone.
Readability would work for you too because you can link it to your kindle.

          • I only plug my Kindle 3 to my computer and to Calibre (told you I do it all complicated!). I know Kindle Fire is a lot easier. What I do is I transfer the fanfic text into a word file and then convert it to mobi in calibre. Some sites like A03 make matters much easier by actually giving you the option of downloading it in a suitable format and then onto your Kindle.

          • Oh dear! Kindle will convert the word text for you! All you need to do is log into amazon and find out your kindle’s email address,(which you can customize) you need to add your senders address so kindle knows its not spam & just email the document.

          • I’ve never logged my Kindle onto amazon and I’m adamant to do so for… reasons (less said sooner mended). I’ve just always used calibre.com and I like the functions it has. It’s just easier for me to accumulate the books I want to transfer onto my devise, prepare the bookcover etc. and just update it every now and again. Told you I was no expert in this field 😉 I’m preparing a small Sherlock fic rec post which I’ll post in a few days. Nothing groundbreaking as I’m sure most avid readers have seen these fics before, but maybe someone has missed something.

          • I meant log into your Amazon account on the web in my note, i suspect your kindle will actually have its email address somewhere in the settings but you need to approve the senders email address. I’ve bookmarked a couple Sherlock but haven’t read them yet. So I for one look forward to your list.

          • I promise to have a look, although I try not to mess with a system that works. You should hear me moan when I updated my iTunes 😉 Took me ages to make it feel right again! Re fanfics, I’ve just listed the most popular ones, but I think they may be a good jumping off point to look for others.

          • I know what you mean about iTunes! LOL I always end up customizing it back to what I’m used to. I used to download fanfic into iTunes but got tired of synching – sending it to kindle puts it in the cloud (I do back each Fic into google drive to be sure)

this link might suit you even better
            http://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle

I better get working on that post! LOL

          • I’ve used Calibre in the past, you should be able to eliminate that step completely. Here’s the amazon link which describes it more in detail : http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_pdoc_main_short_us?nodeId=200767340

Of course once you have readability (free on the web) use the bookmark and link it to your kindle (it uses that same service described above) you won’t even need to make a word document!

          • And the writing? Once you find the good stuff that isn’t predictable and contrived (though I still get hooked of it) is impressive!

          • It really is. Within the first few paragraphs I just know if the author has captured the essence of the characters. Once they do, I don’t really care if it’s cannon or AU. It’s that elusive element of reality (yup, that’s important even with fiction) that makes for a great read. Sometime authors lose me when describing the naughty scenes. I literally find myself thinking: Heck, where is that hand? How does that go? 😉 can’t be easy to write!

  24. Welcome back, it’s good to see you again ! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Survey completed. 😉

I do have an exciting holiday coming up, in fact, I fly out tomorrow…to Los Angeles!!! Yey!!!
Meeting my friend out there for 2 days, then we’re off to San Diego for Comic Con. Alas, so Hobbit panel this year 😦 (but I kinda figured there wouldn’t be, what with PJ’s filming schedule clashing! D’oh!) But hey ho! Super excited!
Guess I should finish my packing soon…and prepare to melt in the Californian heat! ooh-urh! 🙂

            Hey hey!
Ahhhh, had an awesome time – did not want to return home!
Nah, no Hobbit panel, sad times! Though I’m not sure how I would have reacted to seeing Armi on the stage. Probably would have squealed then fallen off my chair. (To then be escorted from the room…*ahem*). There was OneRingNet panel however, which was fun – wee video message from Jed Brophy ^^
We couldn’t get into the Sherlock panel – the queue was rather crazy! As were most of the queues!! Got to attend panels for True Blood and Hannibal though – they were awesome. And I was practically ankle-grabbing distance from Zachary Levi, who, (sorry Richard), is one of my “other lovers”! Yum! hehe!
I’d love to go again next year, but will have to see if I can spare the dosh…again!
            Xxxx
